Hi Adamm,

I don't believe that 'handcuffed' hands at waist height is the way to go. This is fine perhaps at the grass roots level.

Generally speaking, the GK's hand position (height of hands) is governed by how far away the striker is from the goal. Compare two separate scenarios... The first is a ball being struck 50m away from goal - here, the GK can 'relax' in any shot stopping position and have his hands as high as he likes because distance = time. Our GK in this scenario has plenty of time to adjust his hands to the appropriate 'set position' because the striker is so far away. Now let's go to the other extreme where the striker is now engaged in 1 vs 1 with the GK at a distance of 2m. The GK's hands should be low down to the ground (ideally low enough so that the ball can't roll under outstretched fingers) to cover the vulnerable space either side of his feet. Now, here's the theory... anywhere from 2m - 50m (for arguments sake) there are varying heights the hands should be. But as a general rule of thumb, the closer the striker is to goal, the lower the hands are in the 'set position'.

Hi Oscarinho,
Thanks for your comment. I totally agree with you on this.
The modern day GK should have the ability to deal with balls played back under pressure and feel confident about playing out from the back. Too many GK's (even at senior level) shy away from the responsibility of supporting a team mate in possession of the ball. I do not understand why this happens. This is not the goalkeeper we should be trying to develop. The general mind set of 'I am a goalkeeper therefore I should defend the goal' is archaic. There is so much more to the GK role than just shot stopping as many people still believe. Show me a GK who can ping balls off the ground with both feet or side volley to a strikers chest while man marked - then I'll show you a quality goalkeeper! - JC.

Do GK's realise that they can communicate with their pass... that is the best way to let players know... MOre ball worked required by all GK's I suggest...

My old coach used to tell me to hold my hands at waist height with my hands facing in like i am wearing handcuffs. This has been a problem when shots are close to body and low. I will try out this new stance on the weekend
